| About Jewish Family Services | |||
The roots
of Jewish Family Services of Salt Lake date back to the
![]() 19th Century. During this time JFS has had the goal of providing the highest quality of caring and support to individuals and families. Today, more people than ever rely on JFS and its staff of highly trained professionals and dedicated volunteers for help when they need it. JFS offers a broad range of services and programs which are constantly being re-evaluated in response to the need of the community, both today and in the future. Jewish Family Services of Salt Lake City is a non-profit social service organization promoting the well-being and social welfare of all families and individuals in accordance with Jewish custom and tradition. A Bit of History The first Jews known to have come to the Salt Lake Valley arrived in the 1850's. Quickly, the Jewish community grew, and within a few years the need for a family service organization became evident. In response, a group of philanthropically-minded women organized the Jewish Relief Society in 1872, "to give aid to needy Jewish families and individuals, both local and transient." Clothing, food, shelter and medical care were provided. By the early 1960's, the role of the Jewish Relief Society had broadened beyond its original mission to include individual, couple and family counseling. In 1962 the organization's name was changed to Jewish Family Services. From this came the community-wide, dynamic JFS we know today. Over time, the funding of the organization also evolved. At first, the society relied solely on membership dues of $1.00 per year, and then expanded its funding base to include the local Community Chest. Today, Jewish Family Services receives funding from a variety of individual, community, philanthropic and government sources.
